Background and purpose of the consultation

AI’s rapid and wide advancement, its innovation potential and the potential risks it carries, requires an ethical approach. International and national government bodies have produced their own high quality work on ethical AI.  In March 2019, Digital Dubai produced its own principles, guidelines and self-assessment toolkit. Since its launch, The Executive Council has advised that the toolkit is to be used by all public entities looking to implement AI systems.  All our work is overseen by an AI Ethics Advisory Board, the membership of which is drawn from public policy, academia, legal, technology and business backgrounds. 

Our aim is to update the various aspects of our ethical AI work, in order to provide highly practical and relevant support to those developing AI systems for use in Dubai.  The time has now come to engage stakeholders on how these guidelines can be improved as the legal, regulatory, technical and societal contexts change.   

How this consultation is organized

This consultation is structured around 4 specific areas:

1. Your Views on our AI Principles;
2. Your Views on our AI Ethics Guidelines;
3. Your Views on the Future Direction of Governance of AI Ethics in Dubai; and
4. Your Views on the Development of Further Tools and Approaches for Safe AI.

The closing date for completed responses is 21st of November 2019. 

Further to this consultation, Smart Dubai will publish an updated version of the current AI ethics guidelines, as well as a future work plan for AI ethics in Dubai.  Our promise is to listen and take account of all views received, and to include as many as practicable in the next phase of development for our ethical AI toolkit.
